A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
